APOCALYPTICA

is a metal band consisting of 3 cellists and a drummer.

(perttu – mikko – paavo – eicca)

First started as a distraction (hey, sounds familiar), the original four cello students of the classical Sibelius Academy in Helsinki met unexpected success as they released their first album in 1996, made of Metallica covers by cello only.

Of the original band members, only 2 now remain: Max Lilja left in 2002 out of musical differences and now plays for Hevein, and tours with Tarja Turunen; Antero Manninen left the official lineup in 1999, replaced by current LotR geek Perttu Kivilaakso, but returned as replacement a few times and ended up as their fourth onstage cellist for many years (to the delight of many fans who understandably worship Mr CO^OL). He only left that position in 2009, as he returned to his classical roots in the Lahti Symphonic Orchestra.

Remaining founders Eino “Eicca” Toppinen and Paavo Lötjönen steered the Apo boat from covers to original pieces together with Perttu, and from cello-only to added drums and guest vocalists. Jazz-trained drummer Mikko Sirén was a bit confused when he was first contacted by Eicca to become their touring drummer, but he was exactly what the band wanted for their cello metal band: something different. He officially joined the band in December 2005, and still rocks his transparent drums (as well as an occasional cello) with them.

Musically, the band went from cellists playing metal to metalheads playing cello. The difference looks like a wordplay but is crucial. From arranging metal and rock songs from guitars-bass-drums-vocals to cello-cello-cello-cello, they (mostly Eicca at first, then Perttu and Paavo) went to composing first with their classical training, then with their increasing metal experience, pieces that now rival their original muses’. Guest contributors, from German vocalists to world-renowned drummers, have graced Apocalytica tracks since their third album, Cult, adding even more diversity to their already unconventional music.

Strong of 7 albums, one best of and numerous guest appearances with just as many international bands (HIM, Rammstein, The Rasmus, Bullet For My Valentine, etc.), they are now one of Finland’s most renowned bands around the world.
